About Lessons

What age can my child start lessons?

We take babies from birth with our parent-and-child classes at Stanley School. Independent swimming lessons typically begin around age 3–4, when a child is confident without a parent in the water. We teach children up to age 11.

How long is each lesson?

All lessons are 30 minutes long. Lessons run back to back throughout the session, so there’s usually another class starting as yours finishes.

How small are your classes?

We cap classes at a maximum of 4 children per teacher — significantly smaller than most council programmes — so every child gets genuine individual attention in every lesson.

What levels do you teach?

We teach four levels: Beginner, Improver, Stroke Improver, and Advanced. We also offer Baby and Parent & Child lessons for children under 3, and private one-to-one lessons for children who want to accelerate their progress.

How do I know which level my child should be in?

Just get in touch and describe where your child is with their swimming — Hayley will recommend the right starting level. We’d always rather place a child correctly than have them frustrated in the wrong class.

Can my child move up levels mid-term?

Yes — if your child is progressing faster than expected we won’t hold them back. We’ll discuss it with you and move them up when a suitable space is available. Progress always comes first.

Do you offer private one-to-one lessons?

Yes — we offer private 1:1 lessons where your child gets the undivided attention of one of our teachers. Ideal for children who want to accelerate progress, work on a specific stroke, or who benefit from a quieter environment. Get in touch to enquire.

What happens during school holidays?

Term-time lessons follow the school calendar and don’t run during school holidays. We do offer holiday intensive courses during some school holiday periods — check our Holiday Courses page for upcoming dates.

What badge scheme do you follow?

We follow the STA International Learn to Swim Programme, from STAnley First Steps through to the Shark series. Our focus is always on genuine development rather than just ticking badge boxes. Full details on our Badge Scheme page.

Venues

Which venues do you teach at?

We run lessons at three venues across the Wirral: Calday Pool (West Kirby) on Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays; Stanley School (Pensby) Monday to Friday; and Meadowside (Woodchurch) on Tuesdays and Fridays. See our venues page for full details and maps.

Is the pool privately hired?

Yes — at every venue we use the pool privately during our session times. There are no public swimmers sharing the pool during lessons, creating a calm and focused environment — particularly important for younger and beginner swimmers.

Is there parking at the venues?

Yes — all three venues have on-site parking available. For specific directions, visit our venues page which has maps and getting-there information for each location.

Can I watch my child’s lesson?

Yes — parents are welcome to watch from the poolside. For baby and beginner lessons, one parent is in the water with the child. You’ll often find Hayley herself at lessons and she’s always happy to chat about your child’s progress.

Booking & Payments

How do I register?

You can register online via our booking system at morleisure.co.uk. If you’re unsure which level or slot to choose, get in touch first and Hayley will point you in the right direction.

How much do lessons cost?

Full current prices are on our Term Dates & Prices page.

How do lesson payments work?

We manage payments via GoCardless Direct Debit, so you never have to think about it mid-term. A deposit secures your place, with the balance due before the term begins. Full details on our payments page.

What if there’s a waiting list for the slot I want?

Pop on the waiting list — we’ll get in touch the moment a space opens up. Many slots turn over each term as children progress up the levels. We may also be able to suggest an alternative venue or day with sooner availability.

Can I join mid-term?

Sometimes — if a space opens up mid-term we may be able to offer a pro-rated place. The best time to join is always at the start of a new term.

What happens if a lesson is cancelled by Hayley’s?

You’ll be notified as soon as possible and a credit will be added to your account for the following term.

About Hayley’s Swimming School

Are your teachers qualified?

Every teacher is qualified through the STA or Swim England to Level 2 or above, holds an enhanced DBS check, and many are qualified school teachers. We are a Swim Star accredited swim school, recognised by the STA for the quality of our teaching.

How long has Hayley’s been running?

Hayley’s Swimming School was founded in 2014 and has been teaching children to swim on the Wirral for over 10 years. Hayley herself has been teaching swimming for over 30 years on the Wirral.

What do I need to bring to the first lesson?

Just swimwear, a towel, and goggles if your child has them. For younger children a swim nappy (disposable or reusable) is required. For baby lessons, a neoprene swim nappy over the top is also needed, plus warm clothes for after.

Do you have a safeguarding policy?

Yes — all staff hold enhanced DBS checks and we follow best practice safeguarding guidelines at all times. Our full Safeguarding Policy is available on the website.
